Buying a Used Dropside Van: What Should You Check?

How to inspect a used dropside body, its access points and the base vehicle separately before buying.

A used dropside van should be assessed as both a base vehicle and a working body. The open-sided load platform can make materials and equipment easy to access, but that same body also takes the brunt of repeated loading, impact and weather exposure.

Start with what a dropside is for

A dropside is built around an open load bed with side and rear boards that can be lowered for access. That can be useful for builders, landscapers and trades moving materials or equipment that are awkward to load through a conventional van door.

Do not confuse it with a tipper. A dropside body provides side and rear access, while a tipper adds a mechanism that raises the body for unloading. The buying checks overlap in places, but the body functions are different.

Inspect the load floor first

Look across the whole floor for dents, holes, cracked boards, corrosion, patch repairs or areas that appear heavily distorted.

Commercial wear is normal, especially where heavy materials have been dragged or machine-loaded, but the floor should still make sense for the work you plan to do.

Think about your own loads. Paving, timber, fencing materials and landscaping equipment place different demands on the body. If the floor looks heavily damaged, ask whether further inspection is needed rather than assuming it is only cosmetic.

Check the side boards and rear board

Open and close each board where safe. Check for bending, cracks, missing sections, damaged edges and signs that the boards no longer sit squarely.

A board that closes properly and lines up with the body is more useful than one that has to be forced into place. Repeated knocks from loading equipment can distort corners and edges over time.

If the boards are aluminium, steel or another material, judge the condition of the actual vehicle rather than assuming a particular material is automatically better.

Inspect hinges, catches and latches

The hinges and catches are central to how a dropside works. Look for bent components, missing fasteners, excessive corrosion, badly worn locking points or improvised repairs.

Operate them carefully and check whether the boards secure consistently.

A visual check cannot certify that every component is safe under load. If a latch, hinge or catch looks questionable, have it inspected rather than relying on appearance alone.

Look at the body mounting points

Inspect the visible areas where the dropside body and subframe connect to the chassis. Look for obvious cracking, corrosion, damaged mounts or poor-quality previous alterations.

Do not crawl underneath the vehicle in an unsafe environment. If the mounting structure cannot be assessed safely from normal standing positions, leave that part to a professional inspection.

The body can look tidy while the mounting points tell a different story.

Use loading wear as evidence of previous use

Dents around the side boards, scraped floors and battered rear corners can reveal how the vehicle was loaded.

A van used for landscaping materials may show a different wear pattern from one used for building supplies or machinery. None of those patterns automatically makes it a bad buy, but they help you understand the working life behind the vehicle.

Compare the wear with mileage, service history and overall condition.

Think about side access as a practical advantage

The main appeal of a dropside is being able to load from the side as well as the rear.

Think about how that would work on your actual sites. Side access can be useful where materials are lifted by hand or with site equipment, but only if there is enough space beside the vehicle to drop the boards safely.

If you mainly load from a tight rear bay, a conventional panel van or different body may suit the workflow better.

Payload and GVW matter as much as body size

A large platform does not mean the vehicle can legally carry whatever fits on it.

Check the exact vehicle plate and manufacturer or conversion information for payload and gross vehicle weight. The dropside body, crew seating, tools and accessories all use part of the available capacity.

Dense materials can reach the weight limit well before the load bed looks full.

Check load restraint points

If the body has tie-down points, rails or other restraint features, inspect them for visible damage and make sure they are positioned usefully for the loads you carry.

Do not assume the presence of side boards alone is enough to secure every load.

The exact restraint needs depend on the materials and equipment being transported, so the body should support your normal working method.

Inspect the cab and chassis separately

Once you have looked at the dropside body, assess the base vehicle in its own right.

Review service and MOT history, mileage, tyres, brakes, warning lights and cab condition. Use a test drive to check steering, braking and low-speed manoeuvring.

A sound body does not compensate for a poorly maintained base vehicle, and a strong mechanical history does not guarantee the body is in good condition.

Consider single-cab and crew-cab implications

Some dropsides are single-cab vehicles, while others provide extra seating.

If crew capacity matters, check the exact number of seats, belts and the payload left once passengers and equipment are included.

More seats can be useful for a team, but they may reduce the available carrying capacity for materials.

Match the body to your trade

Builders may value side access for timber, boards and materials. Landscapers may need space for mowers, fencing or bulkier equipment. Other trades may use a dropside because awkward loads are easier to secure and access than in a closed van.

The important question is whether open-body practicality outweighs the reduced weather protection and security of an enclosed load area.

Do not rely on a visual check alone for questionable damage

A buyer can identify obvious wear, damaged boards, bent latches and poor repairs, but a visual inspection does not prove the body is structurally sound.

If the body, mounts or locking systems raise concerns, arrange appropriate professional inspection before committing.
