Used Crew Vans: What Should Business Buyers Check?

How to assess whether a used crew van gives your business the right balance of passenger seating, load space and payload.

A used crew van is useful when a business genuinely needs to move people and equipment in the same vehicle. The key buying question is whether the second row solves a real operational need without leaving too little load space or payload for the work.

Which crew vans suit 5, 6 or 7 people?

A crew van or multi-seat commercial vehicle can suit five, six or seven people only when the individual vehicle is built and recorded for that number of occupants. The label "crew van" does not confirm the seat count.

For a five-person team, check that every required seat and belt is present, then measure the load area left for tools and materials. For six people, the same checks apply, but the combined passenger weight and reduced cargo space can make payload and usable load length more important. Seven-seat layouts are less widely available, so a business may need a different multi-seat commercial vehicle or a documented specialist conversion rather than assuming a standard crew van will provide seven places.

Choose around the normal working day. Confirm the exact seating configuration, belts, passenger access, partition, load length and plated limits of the individual vehicle. A van with the right number of seats is not suitable if the remaining cargo area or payload cannot handle the equipment carried by the crew.

Confirm exactly how many seats the van has

Do not rely on the phrase 'crew van' alone. Used vehicles can have different seating arrangements depending on model, derivative and previous conversion work.

Count the seats, check the seat belts and make sure the layout shown in the advert matches the vehicle in front of you. If extra seating has been added or removed, ask what documentation is available and whether the current configuration is correctly recorded.

The number of seats is only useful if the people who need them can travel comfortably without compromising the load you also need to carry.

Check the second row and belts carefully

Inspect the rear seats for wear, damage and secure operation. Check every visible belt, buckle and mounting point and make sure nothing appears damaged or poorly modified.

Do not assume a tidy front cab means the rear passenger area has had an easy life. Crew vans may be used by teams moving between sites, so rear seats, door trims and floor areas can show their own pattern of wear.

If anything about the seating installation looks non-standard or unclear, consider further professional inspection rather than trying to judge the safety of a modification yourself.

Look at the bulkhead or partition arrangement

A crew van may use a fixed partition, shaped bulkhead or other separation between passengers and cargo. Check how the exact vehicle is configured.

The position of the partition directly affects usable load length. A van that appears large externally can have much less cargo space once the second row and partition are included.

Inspect the visible condition of the partition, mounting areas and any load-through features where fitted. Make sure the layout suits the tools, materials or stock your business carries.

Measure the usable load space behind the second row

Do not compare a crew van with the panel-van version using headline cargo figures from another derivative.

Measure the actual floor length, width between wheel arches and height where those figures matter to your work. Pay particular attention to long tools, boxed equipment or racking that must fit behind the passenger area.

If the load only fits by folding, removing or working around seats, ask whether the crew layout is genuinely the right vehicle type for your operation.

Check side-door access for passengers and cargo

Side-door access can be especially important on a crew van because passengers and equipment may use the same or adjacent openings.

Open and close each sliding door several times. Check runners, handles, locks and seals, and think about how colleagues will enter and exit when the van is parked at the kerb or on a tight site.

Then consider whether loading equipment through the same area creates inconvenience or risk of damage to passenger trim.

The best layout is the one that works with your normal parking and loading routine.

Inspect passenger wear separately from cargo wear

A crew van effectively has two working zones. Check both.

In the passenger area, look at seats, floor covering, belts, trim and door cards. In the cargo area, inspect the floor, loading edge, tie-down points, rear doors and any racking.

A vehicle may have been used lightly for passengers but heavily for tools, or the other way around. Treating both areas separately gives you a clearer picture of previous use.

Payload matters more when people and tools travel together

Passengers use part of the vehicle's available payload, as do racking, roof equipment and permanent accessories.

If your business routinely carries a full crew plus tools or materials, check the exact vehicle plate and manufacturer data. Do not assume the remaining payload from a panel-van version applies to a crew derivative.

Think about a real working day: driver, passengers, equipment, stock and any fixed fit-out. A van can have enough physical space yet still be unsuitable if the permitted weight is too low for the combined load.

Decide whether you really need regular extra seating

Some businesses buy crew vans because they occasionally carry more people, then spend most of the time with unused seats taking up cargo space.

Estimate how often the second row will actually be occupied. If extra seating is needed every day, the compromise may be worthwhile. If it is used only a few times a year, a panel van plus separate transport arrangements may offer more useful cargo space.

The decision should be based on normal use rather than the appeal of having extra seats 'just in case'.

Check visibility and manoeuvring

Crew vans can be offered in different body lengths, and extra seating can influence what length a business needs to retain enough cargo room.

Test reversing, turning and parking in a safe area. Check mirrors, camera and sensors where fitted and make sure the chosen body length is manageable at customer sites or depots.

A longer crew van can solve load-space problems but may introduce parking or access compromises.

Confirm the exact factory or converted specification

Terms such as crew van and double cab are used differently across manufacturers and conversions. Do not assume they describe identical layouts.

Check the exact derivative, seating configuration and body arrangement of the vehicle you are buying. If it is a conversion, ask what supporting information is available.

The practical specification of the individual van matters more than the label used in the advert.

Review history and condition once the layout works

After confirming that the seating and load compromise fits the job, return to the normal used-vehicle evidence: service history, MOT history, mileage, tyres, brakes, warning lights and test-drive behaviour.

A crew configuration can be ideal, but only if the underlying vehicle is also a sensible purchase.
